Developing Academic Acceleration Policies: Whole Grade, Early Entrance & Single Subject

This is a revision of the 2009 publication, Guidelines for Developing an Academic Acceleration Policy, which was co-authored by the Belin-Blank Center Acceleration Institute, the National Association for Gifted Children, and the Council of State Directors of Programs for the Gifted. The 2018 publication was co-authored by Ann Lupkowski-Shoplik, Ph.D., Wendy A. Behrens, M.A., Ed., & Susan G. Assouline, Ph.D.

Does your school already have an acceleration policy?

We are collecting sample policies from different school districts. We might include yours on this website. Make sure your administrators are aware that you are sharing this information with us, and share your acceleration policy here.

Developing Academic Acceleration Policies:

  • Presents recommended elements of acceleration policies
  • Supports schools in creating comprehensive and research-based acceleration policies that are compatible with local policies.
  • Provides checklists for
    • A Whole-Grade Acceleration Policy
    • An Early Entrance to Kindergarten or First Grade Acceleration Policy
    • A Subject Acceleration Policy
